Lose Fat Gain Muscle Workout - Burning Fat Or Burning Muscle?

A common question I'm asked frequently is if I start working out will I burn fat or burn muscle first?  This is understandable as most people that want to start working out do so to lose weight, not muscle.  In order to answer that question it is important to understand the process behind how the body uses the nutrients that we feed it.  Once you understand this then you can establish the correct "lose fat gain muscle workout" that is right for you.

Whenever we eat our body is taking in nutrients, fat included.  As the digestive process starts the body begins to break down this food.  The nutrients from the food will be used by the body in various ways.  Some of the fat that is consumed will be stored to be used later for fuel.  Our bodies will eventually seek out "stored energy" so it can continue to function normally.  Other forms of stored energy come from glycogen, proteins, carbohydrates and muscle tissue.

Once the body needs more fuel for energy it will burn proteins.  Any proteins that the body doesn't need to burn for energy will be excreted.  Once proteins are depleted the body seeks out carbohydrates for fuel, both the simple and complex kinds.  Simple carbs burn more quickly than complex carbs.  The main form is glycogen.  This is stored sugar and provides a great deal of energy that the body needs.  Once our glycogen stores are depleted the body then turns to fat.  The fat will be broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream.  Finally, the last source of fuel is muscle tissue.

So when you are performing a lose fat gain muscle workout your body will burn fat long before it burns muscle tissue.  The misconception that muscle tissue is burned first likely is confused with burning glycogen.  Because glycogen is stored in our muscle tissue.  When the body burns glycogen for fuel it is not affecting the muscle tissue itself, only the glycogen stores.
